Care that fits the way you live
Care That Fits River Valley Life
The lower Connecticut River runs past small river towns, marshes and the shoreline, and many people here commute up Route 9, along I-91 or down I-95, or work long seasons on the water and in the shoreline towns. Appointments run 6:00 PM – midnight ET. Evenings include Fridays and Sundays. A visit can happen after the commute, after dinner, or once the house is quiet.
For College Students
Middletown is a college town. Evening visits fit around classes, labs, rehearsals and practice, and care can focus on what students most often bring: focus, sleep, stress around exams and the adjustment to life away from home. You need to be physically in Connecticut at the time of each session, so plan visits for when you are on campus or at home in the state. If you are covered on a parent's plan from another state, check the list below; it includes Blue Cross Blue Shield plans from other states.
Rest, Rhythm and the Brain
The brain's stress system is built to switch on and then settle. Long commutes, busy seasons and broken sleep can keep it switched on, and over time that shows up as worry, low mood or trouble focusing. Care here works on both sides: medication when it helps, and the sleep, movement and daily rhythm that let the stress system settle again.
Every River and Shoreline Town
Care reaches every town in the region by secure video, with no parking, traffic or waiting room.
See every town
Care is available by telehealth in every town of the lower Connecticut River Valley, including Middletown, Cromwell, Portland, East Hampton, Middlefield, Durham, Haddam, East Haddam, Chester, Deep River, Essex, Killingworth, Clinton, Westbrook, Old Saybrook, Old Lyme and Lyme. Whether you live by the river, on the shoreline or in the hills above them, the care is the same, with no parking, traffic or waiting room.

Awareness Is the First Step in Healing
A full evaluation, then a plan you help design
Care begins with a full evaluation, 60 to 90 minutes, that looks at how your brain and body are working together: sleep, stress, attention, mood, health history and what you want to change. You and Michael then design a plan that may include medication when it helps, supportive therapy, and lifestyle foundations like sleep, movement and nutrition, because each of these shapes brain biology.
A. Michael Crook, MSN, APRN, PMHNP-BC, is a Board-Certified Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner licensed in Connecticut. If you have been searching for a psychiatrist in the Middletown area, it may help to know that in Connecticut a psychiatric nurse practitioner independently evaluates, diagnoses, prescribes medication and provides therapy. Michael's work starts from brain biology: your struggles aren't character flaws, and every brain can heal, grow and change.

Focus, Calm and Care After Hours
Building Focus Without Stimulants describes non-stimulant ADHD care that strengthens focus and follow-through. Lasting Calm, Built on Brain Biology describes anxiety and panic care without benzodiazepines. Care That Fits Your Evening explains how every visit fits after the day is done. No controlled substances are prescribed in this practice, by design.
For Children, Teens, Adults and Older Adults
Michael sees children, adolescents, adults and older adults. For younger clients, a parent or guardian is part of the care, and evening visits leave the school day untouched. Older adults who would rather not drive after dark can be seen from their own living room. Care can also focus on what you are working through right now, such as worry, low mood, sleep or stress, without requiring a diagnostic label.
