Life in Northwest Connecticut

Care that fits the way you live

Care Without the Long Drive

Northwest Connecticut is the state's widest open country: hills, lakes, farms and small town greens, with miles between them. More space between towns often means a long trip to any in-person appointment, and a long round trip can turn one visit into half a day. A video visit takes the drive out of it entirely. Appointments run 6:00 PM – midnight ET. Evenings include Fridays and Sundays.

Snow, Ice and Dark Evenings

Winter in the hills can make evening driving a real obstacle. A video visit does not change with the weather: you log on from where you are, as long as you are physically in Connecticut at the time of each session. If your home internet is limited, mention it during the free consultation so the visit can be planned around a steady connection in a private space.

Daylight, Movement and the Brain

The Litchfield Hills are known for trails, lakes and quiet. Daylight, time outdoors and steady movement act on the brain's stress and sleep systems, and short winter days can weigh on both. These foundations can be part of a care plan, alongside medication when it helps.

Weekend and Part-Time Residents

Many people split their time between a home here and a home in New York or elsewhere. Visits can happen whenever you are physically in Connecticut, including weekends spent in the hills. If your coverage comes from another state, check the list below; it includes Blue Cross Blue Shield plans from other states.

How Care Works

A full evaluation, then a plan you help design

Care begins with a full evaluation, 60 to 90 minutes, that looks at how your brain and body are working together: sleep, stress, attention, mood, health history and what you want to change. You and Michael then design a plan that may include medication when it helps, supportive therapy, and lifestyle foundations like sleep, movement and nutrition, because each of these shapes brain biology.

A. Michael Crook, MSN, APRN, PMHNP-BC, is a Board-Certified Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner licensed in Connecticut. If you have been searching for a psychiatrist in Northwest Connecticut, it may help to know that in Connecticut a psychiatric nurse practitioner independently evaluates, diagnoses, prescribes medication and provides therapy. Michael's work starts from brain biology: your struggles aren't character flaws, and every brain can heal, grow and change.

Focus, Calm and Care After Hours

Building Focus Without Stimulants describes non-stimulant ADHD care that strengthens focus and follow-through. Lasting Calm, Built on Brain Biology describes anxiety and panic care without benzodiazepines. Care That Fits Your Evening explains how every visit fits after the day is done. No controlled substances are prescribed in this practice, by design.

For Children, Teens, Adults and Older Adults

Michael sees children, adolescents, adults and older adults. For younger clients, a parent or guardian is part of the care, and evening visits leave the school day untouched. Older adults who would rather not drive after dark can be seen from their own living room. Care can also focus on what you are working through right now, such as worry, low mood, sleep or stress, without requiring a diagnostic label.
